"American Gothic on Highway 30, near Mount Vernon, Iowa" © Sandy Dyas

"Grant Wood was born in Anamosa, Iowa on February 13, 1891. He was certainly a pretty famous painter and a well-known Iowan. Wood lived and painted in his studio near downtown Cedar Rapids from 1924-1934. His most renowned painting is "American Gothic", painted in 1930. The man in the painting was Grant Wood's dentist."

"I spotted this mural on Highway 30 (the Lincoln Highway) as I was leaving Mount Vernon. I teach at Cornell College and needed to make a run to the photo store in Cedar Rapids. It was early in May and I was already thinking....Landscape in Iowa. My friend Marty later gave me the scoop: an eastern Iowa artist named Mark Benesh re-created American Gothic on the barn. KCRG the local TV station covered the story and has photos of the mural in progress. It is a beautiful sight to behold."
